Automatic transmission? If so you might suspect the neutral safety switch.

Set the emergency brake

Try starting it in Neutral rather than Park. Still no starter engagement? Hold the key in the start position and move the gear selector through its path.

That does not completely rule out the neutral safety switch as I had one become disconnected. Pull the cover off of the mechanism and have a peek; you will see the switch and tell if it is moving with the selector.
