Could my intermittent no start be caused by a failed in tank fuel pump? 200 1990

My 1990 245 died a couple weeks ago and after towing it home and researching the Brickboard I replaced the crank position sensor and got it running again

In the process I replaced the Ignition Module, the coil, and the fuel pump relay all with known good parts

(also replaced the alternator since the dashboard lights had been dimly lighting while I was driving)

Once running again the dash lights seemed to have gone out and everything seemed right with the world (as long as I stayed inside my wagon that is!)

It was a little rough starting the next morning but it caught the second try and ran fine all the way to work.

then I come out from work after a long day and the car cranks but no start! 4 or 5 tries, about to give up then ... after a couple of more tries it stumbles and catches and runs rough for 30 seconds and then it all clears up and I drive home with no other symptoms.

more research on the board and I'm thinking it's either bad spark plug wires or a bad fuel pump.

this morning I try starting it (it's spent the night in the garage rather than out in the spring dampness) and it starts right up (the dashboard lights are all now brightly lit rather than off like they should be when running!).

I listen to the main fuel pump and it seems to sound fine (although it's pretty quiet and much less noisy than my old '86 fuel pump) - I stick my long screwdriver down into the gas filler hole and listen for the in tank pump (maybe not such a good idea now that I think about it)... nothing... quiet as a mouse.

if my in tank pump is indeed deceased could it be a cause of an intermittent no start?

thanks

jack
