check engine light 200 1991

What are some of the reasons the chk engine light would come one? My 240 has
135K miles. My son found a hose that was disconnected--going to manifold i
think, but he put a new one on, then discon battery to reset light. But after
driving about 20 miles, the light came back on. The engine tries to rev when
i'm stopped at a light with foot on the brake. I've just put about $900 work
into this car & hope this won't be another expensive fix. Appreciate any ideas.
