M41 rattle question 140-160

Sorry for the lack of details. I haven't driven the car in a year. It's a car that I sold last year. The current owner got rear-ended so I'm getting it back as a parts car for the 144 and another 142 that I just purchased. As I recall it happened when you let off the gas but before engaging the clutch. I could also feel it in the shifter. It wasn't afffected by corners, gear that it was in, or speed. It shifted fine and there wasn't any clunking. I've never dug into a transmission before but I'd rather learn with it out of the car then do the swap first and break something later. Was the D-Type the early M41 and the J-Type was the later one?
