How to check for leaking/cracked block on 93 960? 900 1993

My friend just bought a 1993 960 Wagon in SF. Car is beautiful condition. However, the corner Shell station mechanic says "engine has a cracked block". Needs to be replaced. We don't trust the mechanic since he's not a Volvo specialist.

I'm a VW guy, told her I'd look at the car this weekend.

I've read the 960FAQ, but wondering if anyone has seen a cracked block lately and best procedure to diagnose...

Are the symptoms coolant in the oil? or coolant leaking externally? if external, should I put dye in the coolant and use UV light or will it be obvious?

If problem found, has anyone repaired them lately with JB Weld or similar? or do you have to swap out the block.

If another engine is required, what is the best donor year/model to get that will fit with minimum amount of fuss? (would prefer to swap complete engine rather than transfer components).
