Say it ain't so ... or is it? B23F octane requirement , that is. 200 1983

Not true, I run my 84 on 87 octane. That's what the owners manual calls for. If it wont run on 87 you have other issues.

The B23 does have the highest compression of all the red blocks, so your running on the edge of pinging. If you have problems, the things to check are.

1) The airbox thermostat, make sure it's not stuck you could be sucking hot air. Better yet remove it and the metal flex pipe and plug the opening.

2) Make sure the air filter is clean, replace it on a regular basis. This took me by surpise and was the cause of one of my pinging problems.

3) Carbon build up, BG44-K is good.

Like I said the B23 runs on the edge, and if you let the little things slide and don't keep it in tune it will ping.

When I bought my car 15 years ago it would only run on premium, I had to ween her off of it.
