Howdy Calpete,
Engine at operating temperature, open throttle plate, cranking speed of 250-300RPM, compression should be 128 - 156 PSI.
It sounds like you might have some carbon buildup. Add Techron, Berryman, or Sea Foam fuel additives to the next few tanks of gas and drive it like you stole it. After several tanks of fuel (and the chemical tool of your choice), check the compression again. If it is still high but the car does not ping or rattle, count your lucky stars and continue to pour a can of addititve in with every fill up. Eventually the carbon should be blown out.
If the engine knocks, pings, or rattles under load you will need to have the carbon buildup removed from combustion chambers. This is not an optional maintenance item. The rings, valves, and pistons can be destroyed by detonation. If you must remove the head anyway, now is a good time to renew the timing chain, water pump, thermostat, and all the other maintenance items that can be done at the same time.
I would not bother removing the head if the car runs just fine and doesn't rattle or ping.
If the only symptom you have is a compression check that is higher than normal, (but even across all cylinders) and no other symptoms, your engine might have been repaired with a shaved head and/or thinner head gasket at some time in the past. Do you know the history of the car?
