"Backfire' on Cold Start 200

I have a '90 240 with about 140 Kmi. on it. It recently has started to backfire (?) when it is started from cold. I hesitate to call it a backfire because the engine makes just one muted pop, almost sounds like a burp, when it is fired up. The car has been generally well-maintained and it runs out fine with no other symptoms or problems. Does anyone have any ideas of what would cause this type of "backfire"?

Thanks, one and all,

Rich
