tailgate glass replacement 200 1993

I have a rusty tailgate with intact glass on my car and a rustfree tailgate replacement with no glass. I have checked the archives and found descriptions for replacing the glass that don't match my situation - neither glass is or was held in by rubber, but with some kind of black, sticky flexible caulking. I got all the glass remnants off the replacement hatch with pliers and an exacto knife. Has anyone done this job? Glass shops want a fortune for a new piece of glass and about $175 to take the old one off and install it on the new "if everything goes OK". What do you think?
