Suddenly started missing and running roughly, especially on acceleration at all speeds. 900 1996

After driving for about 15 miles at 40 to 50 mph moderate highway speeds, with no warning, my 1996 960 started missing and became sluggish. When accelerating very hard at all, "check engine" ligh flashed at the one second interval rate. Easing up on gas pedal caused light to quit flashing, but still misses and runs rough. I have had a slight missing at idle for some time, but nothing like what it does now. How do I go about diagnosing this? I am thinking of investing in a diagnostic readout tool for this, and for future use too. Any suggestions on either the problem and/or tools would be appreciated.
