Crand Pos Sens: brittle/breakage...how often does that occur? 200 1989

Doing some maintenance on wife's '89 244, AT, B230 170K. In changing the crank position sensor on the bell housing I have heard of occasional breakage of the attachment/threaded block just inside the bell housing when these get old. It is apparently what the sensor threads into. I can't remember ever changing ours out before, (we've had it since new). OTH, while the car has been often in damp climates it rarely has been in bad salt-treated highways in winter so I'm not sure we've unusual corrision exposure.

How common is this problem? It worries me some as I do not want to have the transmission pulled just to repair that part.
