What does the SRS light mean? 700 1990

On my old 740 sedan (1990 180k miles ) a red light on the dashboard lights up "SRS" and all things electrical shut off. The car is shut off and restarted and the light is gone. This has happened twice but will probably be happening more often. What is this light?
