spitting noise from exhaust side of engine 900 1993

Just looked at a nice 93 940S wagon. One thing bothers me - at idle, the engine makes a kind of "spitting" noise which seems to come from the exhaust manifold side of the block. Noise goes away (or is drowned out) as the engine revs. Can't see any signs of exhaust leaks ....
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
