Viable replacement for spongy floor mats? 200 1983

I just removed my front seats, pulled the carpets and spongy floor mats to thoroughly inspect my floors and clean out the rocker panels, etc. I would rather not put the sponges back in. Does anyone have suggestions for a better material to insure the safety of my floorpans? Something that won't hold onto moisture.
Also, was this material used all the way up through the '93 models? If not, I would consider getting mats from a newer junker. Thanks ahead for suggestions.
Regards,
Jim
