bumpy road makes headlights go out, then on 200

Hi All,
I had the misfortune to travel down a severely washed out & rutted road Friday night and as dark approached I turned on the headlights. Parking lights worked fine, but no headlights. Grrr....

Sunday after traveling back out those same bumpy roads, [car sat at campsite w/o moving or running engine] headlights work fine.... ????

So I am trying to r&r this by tracking down all the connections from the headlights rearward. Is there a more systematic method? Are there any specific trouble prone connections I should be paying attention to? Any suggested maintenance or improvements to the headlight system while I am doing this project?

Also, hi-beams have not worked since I got the car in Sept, so I suppose that now is the time to tackle that project too...might be inter-related issues?

TIA,
John
