760 gas mileage increase 700 1988

I realized that it had been over a year since I started the 760 project to get better gas mileage and stop the fouling of the plugs on startup. As some of you know, I took the turbo off of the motor and replaced the exhaust manifold with an 86 244 B230F part as a first step. That was too late to help the B230ft motor that was in the car and it never got above the 22 mpg that it got with the turbo installed although the oil consumption lessened. That motor got so noisey that I pulled it at 167k miles and replaced it with the stock B230f from the 86 244 with 235k miles. Without changing anything else on the fuel system and plugging up the side mount distributor instead of the rear head unit on the turbo, the mileage went to 24+ average during my 64 mile round trip commute. With 6000 miles on the project engine, the oil consumption is not measurable, and it has never fouled the plugs on a cold start, which I always thought was due to the lower compression ratio of the B230ft motor. This matches the performance of the 86 245 and is slightly less that the averages of the 93 944 with the locking stall converter, which probably would be an advantage over the turbo tranny, although the higher stall gives a better off line acceleration. It still is not a 240, but it is getting closer.

I am planning another B230FT block with Clevite sleeves and a possible 3 7/8" bore if the Chevrolet 283 piston skirts can be made to clear the crank journals with out damaging the integrity of the piston. This one will probably have a 16 valve head with an after market fuel system to get a little better control of the fuel economy, but I have not found a system yet, possible a Nippon product.

Regards,
