Checked the AMM still runs like crap 200

My 89 240 has been running like crap and shutting off when I take my foot off the gas. Recently, it has been shutting off and not restarting until it rests for 30 minutes or so. I checked the AMM based on a tip here, by unplugging it and seeing if the car idles better. It ran worse when I unplugged it. Could it be a bad knock sensor (also suggested here)? If so how do I know if it is? The check engine light comes on immediately even after unplugging the battery cable to reset it. Is the free Autozone code check they do worth a try?
