Ignition Switch or Starter? 200 1992

Greetings,

I've searched the forums and FAQ but can't find a close match to what my 1992, 240 wagon is doing.

Basically it will crank right up when cold, but when hot (after driving say fifteen minutes)it will often crank once or twice then "catch" and make a kind of loud, unpleasant dying noise like maybe the starter has gotten stuck and stopped in mid crank. After waiting several minutes, and after a few more tries cranking, it will generally, though somewhat reluctantly, start.

Does this sound more like a starter problem or an ignition switch issue? Or something else entirely?

Thanks for all the help.

Andy
