84 Turbo 240 Fuel Pump Bolt spins and does not come out.

I almost lost my mind today. I removed the fuel filter bracket from the firewall to get a better grip on the fuel filter. I broke it lose and now all it does is spin around. It seems to tighten, but it does not come out of the filter. Are you serious? Did I do something weird? Thanks.
