I respectfully disagree. My B18 equipped '66 gets 26-28 MPG on the highway at 60-65 MPH. If it had OD, it would do a bit better even on the other side of 65 MPH.
Even so, for a daily driver I would recommend the 240. I love my Amazon. But I have quickly come to appreciate the ride, handling, and comfort of the '82 245GLT Intercooled Turbo I recently bought for $500. It has been getting 24-26 MPG, just a shade less efficient than the Amazon even though it has OD. But it has a lot more power. Seat of the pants impression is at least twice the power of the '66.
Parts are more readily available for the 240. And, for the most part, less expensive. I personally prefer the simplicity of the older cars. Others here have flatly stated that the 1993 240 is the best of the lot. I don't know as I have never ridden in one.
Unless it has already been done, any car you buy with high miles and some age will require all new rubber parts everywhere. That is a major expense and several hours of work that is often overlooked. Beyond that, maintenance items and the occasional failure will keep you busy.
