Dumb(Probably) Timing Belt Replacement Question ..... 700 1988

1988 740GLE wagon. Non interference B230 engine. I have never replaced a timing belt but do want to replace the belt on this car as I do not know when it last was changed and car does has 170,000 miles on it. When I look thru faq I am a bit confused about aligning marks so all is in proper synch. Does this only apply to replacing a broken belt ? If one is replacing an existing intact belt and does not disturb various alignment points can't one just put on new belt and having not disturbed alignment points not have to worry about it ?? Guess I am missing something or I just don't understand procedure.
