Hub adapter for Italvolanti steering wheel 140-160

I just tried to mount a 1980s 14" 4-spoke Italvolanti Corsa wheel on my 1974 164e. The adapter that came with it is a really close fit, but won't go down far enough for the horn brush to make contact. IPD says there were three adaptors for 140s/160s: one for '72 & earlier, one for '73, and one for '74 and later. Does anyone know how to tell them apart and/or have any ideas for getting this too fit? (could I use a couple small washers to push the brush out? It's less than 1/4" off.) Alternately, does anyone have a '74 adapter they'd want to sell or trade?
