Outside Door Handle does not open...disconnected somewhere? 900

The passenger side front door does not open from the outside. There is no tension or resistance to the button on the inside of the handle.

I pulled the interior panel but I don't see any access to the linkage behind the handle, and except for two screws inside the door jam I don't see how to remove the handle to see what is behind it.

I think there is a link going from the handle to the inside door lock mechanism opposite the door strike. Is there an easy way to do this?

I have a feeling this must be a common problem because at some point or another every door handle is difficult to use, especially wintertime. I looked in the FAQ and I can't find anything specific for preventative suggestions for winter.
