So I did a mini teardown of my 86 244 and replaced my LH engine harness with an updated Volvo one with good insulation. I also converted to EZK ignition from a 740. During this I yanked the intake manifold off and cleaned up everything I could and replaced gaskets and seals. To make a long story short I have everything wired back up and its all good except when my electronic fan kicks in the idle gets very lumpy and a few times its just died.
The charging system is very healthy with the newly installed Denso 100 amp alternator, Optima Redtop battery, and 0 gauge wiring for mostly everything. At idle I get 14.3 - 14.5 bolts and the meter on my power distribution block says its only drawing 7-10amps with no accessories on. When the fan comes on the amps do not jump and the voltage for the most part stays in the 14s.
The weird thing I discovered today was when I unplug the Air Mass Meter, the idle actually smooths out and raises to about 880 rpm and when the fan comes on the idle does not change and acts normal. I have swapped in 4 different AMMs inluding one from my other LH 2.2 240 which I know works. The car has a brand new Fuel Pressure Regulator, Volvo OEM fuel pump relay, new o2 sensor. I have swapped numerous other items including fuel ecu, spark ecu, powerstage module, knock sensor, my old battery, different alternator, idle motor.
So what could be causing the car to idle the same if not a tad smoother without the AMM plugged in no matter what AMM I try? This 244 has been down for awhile and I really want her back on the road because its my nice and quiet daily driver.
