Well, I have to ask... why would you automatically have the car in neutral when you shut off the engine? Why wouldn't you just leave it in whatever gear you were using when you came to a stop?

WRT to cause - usually a combination of things, but that combination will invariably include a buildup of carbon in the combustion chamber. Get rid of the carbon (the ignition source), and the engine will not auto-ignite after it is switched off. That is of course, unless it is *way* too hot.
