Air Conditioner Clutch Replacement ?? 700 1988

1988 740GLE wagon. Have had only 3x months. Now that it is getting warmer I went to try out ac on this car. AC clutch only catches/engages for a few seconds then disengages. I assume that it should stay engaged and not be intermittant. Is this so ? AC clutch appears to be mechanical with no electric to it. Is this so ? If replacing AC clutch is the solution what is my best source for a replacement ? Thanks very much.
