Smoke from Transmission 900 1983

Probably a dumb question but here goes..

She who must be obeyed reported smoke coming from bonnet when sitting in heavy traffic - but no problems at other times...

Checked under bonnet, fluids ok - no sign of exhaust leak so probed further.

Apparantly when sitting in a queue she leaves it in drive with foot on the brake. If she does smoke starts. If she puts car in neutral or park - no problems.

Any suggestions as to what is broken - cos this is a new development.

Car is 1983 940 Wentworh Turbo.
