How to get gas out of my 960? 900 1996

My '96 965 is sick. The engine is running rough, I might post about this later; I expect to get it to my Volvo guy soon. But what I'd like to know now is:

I have 19-20 gallons in my 965. I've never siphoned gas out of a car before. I bought an 8 foot small clear tubing from the fish tank section at walmart. I got it about 3 or 4 feet down the fill hole but it did not touch the gas. I couldn't get it in any further. The car is/was parked on a 5 degree hill nose down. As I'm pretty strapped for cash I'd like to get the gas into my Malibu.
