diesel 240: switching from 3spd auto to M46, Possible? 200 1980

Same year, color, interior. One is a 3spd auto trans, has a good engine, but needs lot of other things fixed like brakes and power steering and tires.

The other has a freshly rebuilt M46 and new clutch and was a daily driver until it overheated and blew a headgasket.

My question is: will a M46 mate with a D24 engine once married to an auto trans?
