crank but no start 120-130

this is a continuation of my previous stalling problem. I spawned a new thread so that there is a minimum of confusion as to what is wrong and what I've tried.

After some very poor running (mostly uphill), I experienced a significant and persistent stall near home and could not get the car to restart after:

1) Wiring the coil directly to the battery
2) Swapping electronic ignition units

For quite some time I could get no spark at all from the #1 wire (where my spare timing light connects)

After about 30 minutes of fighting with the car, I finally managed to pop-start it and it ran poorly all the way home - this was with a different ignition unit and with the coil wired directly to the battery. I started to get a weak-looking spark judging by the timing light and after a couple minutes, I was able to pop the clutch and start the car.

I've now experienced a stall/no restart after rough running with:

*Two different blue bosch coils
*Direct battery-to-coil wiring
*Stock bosch points dizzy.
*Crane electronic ignition dizzy.
*two different XR700 ignition brains.

The clues I have are these:

1) The problem sometimes occurs with the car on a slope. I've had three stalls near work, which is at the bottom of a hill. It has also happened in the driveway which is flat and also this evening it stalled on a flat road - but after I had been climbing a hill.

2) There is no spark when the car stalls. No spark when trying to start it, but the spark usually comes back and the car will fire up normally.

3) It looked as though all spark was lost a couple times on the trip. I managed to keep the car going by reving it high. I left my timing light inline to #1 plug when I was limping the car home.

4) I cannot reproduce the failure mode by wiggling the ignition wire.

5) When the coil was wired to the battery, the car did not shut off when I switch the key off and removed it - that might be normal.

6) I've ohm-tested the wires from the starter to the ignition switch and from the ignition+ to the coil, they both read 0 ohms.

I am extremely frustrated. What the heck is going on? The ignition system is a very simple circuit and I've poured over the wiring diagrams looking for a failure point. The only thing that makes sense is the ignition switch, but my experience this evening suggested that it is NOT the point of failure. My guess would be the coil, but I did not have a spare one in the car to try... I've also tried swapping the coil when I had a no-restart in the driveway and it did not make a difference.

Any ideas before I send this bird to the crusher?
