Steering Upgrade 200

My 1982 240GL Diesel (/Chevy powered for 17 yrs)needs a new rack and pinion. My rack is held in with 2 U clamps. Newer 80's cars utilise 1 U clamp and 2 bolts(into threaded casting) Newer still 90's 240 return to a 2 U clamp system. I'm tempted to upgrade to the 90's rack because it might be better or quicker.
Anyone attempted to install a 90's rack in an early chassis like mine? Are mods required? Would I need the lower steering column also?
