Charging my 134A a/c system on my '88. Port seems too big for charger. Help. 200 1988

Hey guys. Still restoring this '88 240 and noticed that the a/c still has a bit of pressure in it although the a/c is not engaging. Apparently, so far at least, there are no big leaks, just low on 134a. It has been converted over. My question is if the low side port is where I charge it and is that the one near the dryer on the passenger side of the condensor and next to the radiator on this '88? Also, IF that port is for charging, why is it so much larger than what the kits allow that I have used in the past from the parts stores? The little snap on hose attachment on those only seem to fit smaller ports. I cannot seem to find any other ports on this model. Do I have to take this to a dealership to charge the a/c because their attachments are larger? Is there another place to charge it?
