REBUILT ENGINE 140-160 1970

Hey everyone, I love my Volvo 142 but it's getting tired. Having some problems: loss of power (doesn't like San Fran hills or going over 60mph), oil leak(s), and there's tailpipe smoke with sudden exceleration and engine breaking (can't tell if it's gray or blue). I've been told it probably needs a ring job but than a rebuilt engine is the better way to go.

I think the transmission is OK but: the fluid has black mixed with the red and even though it starts out in first and shifts fine and smooth I cannot shift (automatic) into low gear. The shifter just has no where to go.

I have gotten prices from two city mechanics which I use, their prices for a rebuilt engine is $3500 and does not include carbs but does include installation. Seems pretty high to me. Is this a fair price? How can I find a better deal? Can I install a fuel injected engine?

Please help, I would love to restore this one if possible.

Thanks!
