Driving with a disconnected P/S pump OK? ..and for how long? 200 1988

hey all, well the inevitable has happened and my slightly leaky steering rack has turned into a extremely leaky rack. So bad in fact that when I pour any fluid into the reservoir, it just goes right through the system and onto the ground. So much for the stop leak I've been using for two years! I knew its time was coming, but I was hoping it would hold off a bit longer due to a lack of funds. Unfortunately I only made the leak worse by tearing a hole in the drivers side boot while doing some other work. Anyways, what I'm wondering is if it is safe to drive around with the p/s pump belt removed, and if so, how long can I do this before the rack might seize up due to lack of fluid? I haven't attempted this yet as I was worried about safety, but I have no other wheels to get me around until I get/find a new or used rack.

Thanks,
cton.
