If the donor engine is smoking oil like crack cocaine, that ISN'T the engine you want! I have rebuilt all the engines I have used for replacement purposes, but I have done most of the work myself (minus the $500 bill from the machine shop). My average bill on new parts for a B230F runs $800, so $1300 and I know I can get a million miles out of it.

That being said, if the engine in my brick blew up today, I'd go for a long block B230F from a 92 or 93 240, minor improvements in 92, oil squirters were added in 93 to cool the pistons. One simple piece of advice for evaluating a used engine in the boneyard I can give you is to pull the valve cover, if the head has minimal carbon buildup, it is most likely a very good engine, if everything is black, walk away! Don't forget your 10mm wrench so you can pull the valve cover!
