Tailgate lock has a mind of its own 200 1992

Nearly everything else on my '92 245 is working well so I'll whine about a problem I've had since I got the car 8 years ago...

The tailgate lock engages erratically. If I lock or unlock the doors with the central locking feature, there's about a 50% chance that the tailgate will follow suit. I've checked the tailgate wiring harness with a meter, and it's fine, even with gate being moved; and the lock solenoid works well when 12v is applied. Just seems to be something mechanically goofed up that I can't see. Works fine using the key.

Obviously, this one ain't a show-stopper, but I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this.
