Noise in front suspension 700 1987

I have a 1987 Volvo 700T with manual transmission. In the morning, when I first back up and turn the wheel to the left (front of the car goes to the right), I hear a sharp metallic pop coming from the passenger side front suspension. I have checked the ball joints(new), control arms, etc. and everything is tight. Could this be the strut bearings? When i had the car on a hoist and rotated the front wheels, I could not duplicate the sound although the top of the shock rods did not rotate equally.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
