Motor idling at 3500RPM!!! why??? 1800

Hello i'm brand new to this. The other night my buddy and i were rippin around in my 1800E. i let off the gas at one point and realized immediately that the car was still pulling. i pushed in the clutch and the revs stayed at 3500RPM. i limped home and here's what i've checked so far.

-i have checked for any air leaks in the system by plugging the air intake. this resulted in the motor bogging and eventually dying.
-i have replaced the fuel pressure regulator and set the fuel pressure at 24psi. this resulted in a slight drop in idling speed (3400RPM)
-the pressure sensor diaphragm is still working (i sucked on the hose and it seemed to have plenty of deflection)
-i unplugged the auxhillary air sensor and the idling came down to about 2000rpm but it was very laboured and when i rev the motor it bogs and sputters

All i can think of that might be wrong is; i started a small electrical fire the other day. i was removing my header and i bumped the back of my 130Amp alternator. there was some arching and the entire charging wire melted. perhaps there is a wire in the harness that fuse to another one. i did cut open the harness and have a long look inside at the wires that i knew were coming off the brain box that were running in the same harness as the charging wire. my last guess is maybe the trigger points in the distributor are malfunctioning. i'll check tomorrow.

if anyone can shed some light on what is happening or offer a remedy please let me know.

thanks
