Freon fiasco---topping up with R12 (or trying to)

My 89 244 still has R12 in the A/C system. The level is a bit low, as it is not cooling very well, though the compressor runs normally. I bought a can of R12 a few weeks ago, and finally, after much searching, found an R12 charging hose at AutoZone. Today I went to top the system up, but could not get the hose to seal properly to the port on the compressor. It seemed like it was not going on all the way (it turned easily--not cross threaded--for 3-4 turns, then wouldn't go any further) but would not seal, causing loss of refrigerant. Worse yet, on the third and final attempt, the end of the hose BROKE OFF, allowing even more R12 to escape. Thankfully, I had not yet pierced the can, so I still have a full container, and will try again as soon as I can find a better quality charging hose. Any suggestions?
