1983 240 No start still 200 1983

Hey all,

After my 240 died a few weeks ago, I haven't been able to get it started. I've unplugged the air mass meter, to see if it would start and run rich, I've replaced the 25amp fuse near the strut tower, I've replaced the fuel pump relays, and my car still won't start. I think the fuel pumps are working...I think I can hear the fuel pumps run for a couple of seconds to pressurize the system...though i can't tell for sure cause I don't know what I'm listening for.

Is there a relatively easy way to check for spark? And to tell if you need a new cap and rotor? Also, if the cap isn't white, does that mean the car has a non-Chrysler ignition? I've got the red cap.

Another possibility is the starter itself. My car has a starter button wired into it, so that you turn the key to the II position, and push a button on the other side of the steering column to start it. Here's the weird part. If the key isn't in it, I can push the button and it cranks the car. I can also turn the key to the III position and it will crank, but (when it would start) it would only start by cranking with the button. Any idea on how that's rigged? I'd kind of like to eliminate that as a problem too (and restore the original function), but what could the problem be with the starter for it to crank and not engage with the key, but to have actually started with the button? I kind of have to fix it myself, so I can take the car to the BMV and get an Ohio title issued as they have to do a visual inspection, and because of all the problems I had getting the Texas title, it's past the 30 days, and it's not street legal.

Wes
