Exaust system - Glowing red hot (and brick not running well either!) 200 1987

I drove to the office today and while sitting at a red light, some wispy smoke started coming up behind the gear shift. I looked under the car and the part that is directly upstream of the muffler was glowing red hot! This 244 is new to me, I replaced fuel filter, oil, cleaned the flame trap, reconnected all vacuum lines, and replaced the plugs and wires under the hood this weekend.

I uploaded a pic (from my phone so quality is lacking) of the part that is glowing. When I drove the car before I did that work, I did not notice this being an issue. It ran well and did not have the funny small from hot parts. i am worried that I messed up the fuel/air mix somehow when I was tinkering with the car.

Any ideas on what it may be?
