I can hardly believe it myself but it's true. After 3 long years my '82 245 diesel to gas conversion car finally runs!!! I couldn't have done it without
all of the excellent help and support from The Brickboard!!! I especially want to thank Lucid and Goatman. You guys are great!!! Well to bring you guys up to
date, last time I posted on one of my other threads I was trying to troubleshoot my system and fuel pump relays. After we pretty much figured out
that they were working I went on to troubleshooting the fuel delivery system. I replaced the main fuel pump with a new Bosch unit and then I disconnected the
fuel line from the fuel rail and ran the pumps. Well fuell spilled out so I reconnected the line. Still no start. I had a sneaking suspicion that the ECU
was not doing all that it was supposed to and since I have 2 parts cars at my disposal I decided to try another ECU. I hit the key and after about 10 seconds
of cranking she came to life! The only thing I noticed that was strange was that in a very short time the catalytic converter and the pipe behind it was
turning blue and one of the paper labels(that I forgot to remove when I installed it) started to burn off. This all happened early this morning and I
didn't have time to post then but I did have a little time to read some of the other posts. One of them I read talked about another poster having a problem
with a lack of power from the engine and the cat converter turnig cherry red from heat. I think mine would've done the same thing if I'd let it run longer.
Someone replying to this posted an excerpt from the car guys (Ray and Tom) and they said that this is caused from the engine timing being really far off. I'm
thinking that's what's going on with my car as well. What do you guys think? I mean I had the distributor out and I did my best to get the rotor to point to
the #1 plug wire with the piston at TDC but I could possibly be a tooth off or something. I'm going to try turning the distributor one way or the other to see
if it helps. BTW, now when it's running the engine lopes somewhat and there's a medium amount of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Let me know what you
guys think. Sorry for the long post. Thanks again to all! Charles
