Testing a fuel gauge 140-160

Awhile ago I posted about a GT cluster I picked up. I pulled my 144 ORG cluster. The fuel gauge and dimmer switch on the GT cluster are not working. Checked the nuts on the gauge that make contact with circuit board. Swapped out voltage stabilizer as well. Temp gauge works. I have the fuel gauge off the cluster.

Is there a method to test the fuel gauge before I pull the glass an benzel off to take a look inside? I was wondering if the guts from my ORG gauge might fit in the fuel gauge case. The face plate is different from looking at it. Both seem to have been made by VDO.

If I get the fuel gauge going I might look at bypassing the dimmer switch. I can see part of the spring of the dimmer switch sticking out. Not sure if one could find a rheostat to replace it with that might fit through that hole.
