'88 245 running hot 200

Okay first off let me give you a run down of some stuff that has been happening that may or may not be related.
Every now and again when I start the car it lacks power and bogs down when I accelerate and just sounds rough, to fix the problem I restart the car which always fixes it.
My temp gauge hasn't been working lately, I think because the board is messed up and or corroded.
I haven't bothered to fix these things because despite the problems the car functions ok and I haven't been driving all that much anyway.
Today I got in the car and after about 5 minutes I noticed a faint smell of burning, hot engine smell. Then the car sputtered and konked out, I restarted the car and drove home and when I went under the hood it was super hot, the upper radiator hose was VERY hot and the lower was pretty warm, which I would guess means that there is circulation.
Hope this makes sense to someone! Any help greatly appreciated!
