Starter lug sizes 200 1983

A friend of mine as an 83 245 Turbo. I call it "The pound puppy" it has not been kept well, so even if it bites me I can't have it put down.
The starter "HAD" to be done Monday night s with a great deal of dithering I found a starter at a 24 hr. Autozone, and put it in.
Doing this in a driveway with pitch similar to the Alps, and no air tools I got it back in and of course discovered the top terminal is a 1/4 inch like the bottom. I have goten around this problem before, by adapting the cable to the lug. Now it will crank but not start. Sounds like a fuel thing but, I'm not sure at present. I'm going to have the Corpus towed to my house later this evening, so I will have access to my own space and tools.
So is there a problem with the starter? I have a pretty good junk yard five minutes from my house, if they were 24 hrs I'd be in good shape.
BTW, how do I tell if the Wagon is a GL, or DL, and would this make any difference in whigh starter fits and works?
Paul
