Fascinating find while installing radio. 700 1990

So, I finally got tired of tapes and bought a Pioneer CD player. Today I went to install it.

As is apparently common, I had to pull apart the knee bolster and the bracket behind it as well as make a lo-o-ong wiring harness to reach clear to where my left knee normally is because that's where the Volvo engineers stuck the connector for the speakers.

When I popped the bolster off I was greeted with a coiled wiring harness consisting of a red, blue and yellow wires and a thick black cable. This did not look at all familiar.

I looked, and saw that the harness ended at a rectangular device about the size of a paperback book tucked up under the dash behind the left vent duct. The device was wrapped in bubble wrap secured with electrical tape. It also turned out to have a ground wire secured to the body with an 8mm hex screw and a wire attached by an N-connector.

The wiring harness turned out to be cut off, so I removed the whole thing. There is a small tag on the thing that says "TR5E800-11G Subscriber unit NEC". Sticking the number into Google only gives two results, one of which is a PDF file with instructions for programming it, and the other is a useless list of stuff.

I believe I found the remains of a really old cell phone. All of a sudden I'm feeling all historical...

I wonder where the antenna for this thing was. I didn't have the time to trace the wire before it got dark, so I had to stop and close up the patient.

Anybody else find anything interesting in the nether reaches of your Volvo?
