Timing mark jumping 12 to 18 200

My 83 245 has developed a stall but after driving it a bit the car can keep running at idle. So today I checked the timing with a gun. The mark would be at 15 when the car ran smooth but then within a second or two the engine idle would run a bit ruff and the mark would move either toward 12 or up to 18. I replaced the distributor a few months ago but the whole stall thing started with the cleaning of the IAC, which works, or does it?

Any ideas why the timing would be jumping around. Thanks.

BTW- the belt is in good shape and the car has an ipd adjustable cam gear, if that would factor in or not I don't know.
