Funky Battery cable ends 700

I've had a few events where the 740 would not crank.
Then the car will run fine for weeks or months.
Yesterday it quit after returning from a store, I took a crossbar
tire iron (No tools with me) and carefully smacked the battery terminal ends
Positive and negative, and BINGO it started right up.
The cable ends were recently wire brushed and lubed with vaseline.

It looks like the terminal ends themselves can become ratty.
Maybe the junction between the copper wire and the brass (or whatever it is) terminal can become intermittant for high current flow.
The radio and lights were all OK the whole time.
