I don't have one in front of me to double check but I'm 99% sure it's a 1/2" pipe plug (1/2-NPT-14). Pipe threads are cut with a taper to them. But who knows what has been crammed into that hole over the last 45 years.... If your threads are screwed up, I have extra cover plates around...
