Finally reinstalling my dashboard! Alternate reasons for failed odometer?

Well the "knee deep in my dashboard" is now ankle deep

the blower motor (and new 2nd resistor from FCP Groton) are in, the heat adjuster valve has been installed (maybe this winter I'll see if it really helps), all the leaves have been blown out from behind my heater core/evaporator, a new thermostat expansion valve and O-rings have been installed, my gauges are all wired (just not attached to their engine side sensors yet) and lit!, my aftermarket Dual stereo was the last thing I installed before finally buttoning it up AND it doesn't work (powered but no sound from a test using one speaker).

So after I'm done testing my wiring of the stereo speakers I will be putting the final touches on my new non-cracked dashboard installation.

One thing I was not able to repair in this process was the odometer which has stopped working. I assumed it was a broken gear and so I dug into the Instrument Cluster only to find that the small gear was NOT in fact broken! Are there any other reasons why an odometer fails? Should I go ahead and install the cluster because all other reasons are on other parts of the vehicle?
